This paper critically explores Science of Reading (SoR) literacy policies. Through the lens of Apple's theories and drawing on Aydarova's empirical work, we reveal how seemingly neutral SoR reforms are, often co-opted to advance neoliberal standardization, accountability, and privatization. We argue that disentangling SoR from the restraints and manipulation of neoliberalism, allows us to bridge a divide and see that the shortcomings of SoR are actually the shortcomings of neoliberal policy implementation.
