Teaching Writing in Community: Comparative Case Studies of First-Year Teachers in a Community of Practice

Wed, December 3, 8:30 to 10:00am, Planet Hollywood Hotel & Casino, Floor: Mezzanine Floor, Celebrity Ballroom 6

Abstract

Writing instruction is an oft neglected area of focus in teacher preparation and professional development. To understand instructional practices, this comparative case study explored first-year teachers' literacy instruction through a Community of Practice (CoP). Through discourse analysis of meeting recordings and other data sources, this study identified key topics discussed as well as factors that facilitated or hindered writing instruction. This study adds to the conversation on early career teachers and writing instruction.
