Reconceptualizing African American language-speakers as bilingual learners: A systematic research review on African American language-speakers and reading achievement

Wed, December 3, 3:00 to 4:30pm, Planet Hollywood Hotel & Casino, Floor: Mezzanine Floor, Celebrity Ballroom 6

Abstract

African American Language (AAL) has been the subject of study for more than 50 years. One of the original aims of this work has been to improve reading achievement among AAL speaking students. This review synthesizes eleven studies from 2000 – 2021, examining instructional approaches to reading for elementary-grade AAL-speakers. As dual language learners, it argues these students would be better served by language learning methods drawn from bilingual education.
