Navigating Liminal Spaces: Empowering Minority Voices Through Multimodal and Critically Engaged Approaches

Wed, December 3, 8:30 to 10:00am, Planet Hollywood Hotel & Casino, Floor: Mezzanine Floor, Melrose 3

Session Submission Type: Symposium

Abstract

This symposium explores civil literacies’ role in fostering inclusive, critically engaged learning across multicultural contexts. Through digital storytelling, multimodal literacy, and critical racial literacy, it examines how students navigate cultural liminality. Case studies from Canada and Brazil highlight Critically Engaged Language and Literacy Workshops (CELLWs) as tools for agency, self-expression, and civic engagement. The research underscores multimodal approaches’ power to bridge cultural divides, amplify marginalized voices, and promote socially just pedagogies.
