Left on Read: How Elites Respond to Identity-Oriented Messages and Marginalized Constituents

Brief Overview

We use a large audit experiment with elected officials to explore how race, gender, and topic affect responsiveness to constituents. We find that Black men are consistently penalized, and Black women face a penalty if they directly talk about race.
