Voting for Populists: The Effect of Electoral Permissiveness on the Global Surge of Populism

Brief Overview

Using the definition of electoral permissiveness by Taagepera and Shugart (1989), we argue that electoral systems which are more permissive to smaller parties, such as most populist parties, create an institutional incentive for populist voting.
