Rivalry and Empire: How Competition Among European States Shaped Imperialism

Brief Overview

I develop three arguments for why symmetric military rivalries among European states led to imperialism. I then test my arguments analyzing two sustained and intense interstate rivalries, one from the pre-industrial and one from the industrial era.
