Tocqueville on pride and humility in democratic politics

Brief Overview

I show that Tocqueville sees a balance between pride and humility as a key part of democratic character. I identify the elements of this balance and Tocqueville's strategies for promoting them. I end by noting implications for U.S. politics today.
