NATO Membership and Defense Spending: A Causal Analysis

Thu, April 23, 3:20 to 4:50pm CDT (3:20 to 4:50pm CDT), TBA

Brief Overview

Using a matched-panel DiD approach for post-1990 NATO members, we find that neither accession nor the MAP led to significant reductions in defense spending. We rule out any medium-term decreases exceeding 0.25–0.30 percentage points of GDP.
