Checks and Imbalances: When Separation of Powers Facilitates Extremism

Brief Overview

Although separation of powers is believed to prevent extremism, it may produce more extreme policies than non-separation. Theoretically, I show that in veto bargaining with election, non-convex proposals can be optimal even for risk-averse proposers.
