When Informality Excludes: Corruption as a Barrier to Women’s Political Participation

Brief Overview

We argue that corruption acts as an informal gatekeeping mechanism limiting women’s entry to politics. Using 2004-2023 LAPOP data we show that the gender participation gap is significantly explained by differential exposure to corruption.
