Faith in Democracy: The Logic of Church Advocacy for Liberal Democratic Institutions in Africa (Cambridge University Press)
Author: Kate Baldwin
Why have some churches in Africa engaged in advocacy for stronger liberal democratic institutions while others have not? This book explores how churches’ historic investments create different autocratic risk exposure. Where churches invested in schools as part of evangelization, creating high autocratic risk, they have incentives to defend liberal democratic institutions. Drawing on church-level data from across the continent and micro-level evidence from Zambia, Tanzania and Ghana, the book demonstrates when and how churches engage in democratic activism.
