Abstract

Though they may appear to be academic havens, universities and colleges are actually covert
superpower centres that prepare the next generation of environmental fighters to take on the
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the UN. While colleges across the world are putting
their own unique twist on sustainability, they are all connected by the fact that they are the
ultimate influencers, defining the trends that make environmental conservation hip.
We're going to delve deep into the bizarre ways universities are influencing sustainability and the
amusing challenges they are having in this viewpoint paper that is not at all boring. Higher
education holds the key to unlocking a sustainable future, be it Goal 1 (crushing poverty), Goal 3
(keeping us healthy), Goal 5 (smashing gender barriers), Goal 8 (making work fun), Goal 12
(reducing waste), Goal 13 (saying "no" to climate change), or Goal 16 (fighting for peace and
justice).
But there is still more! Living sustainable principles is just as important as teaching them.
Colleges must do what they preach by modelling eco-friendly behavior and encouraging students
to do the same. Institutions must balance the interests of stakeholders, the political situation, and
sustainability principles while maintaining student engagement and entertainment. It is a dance
of communication.
