This grounded theory study was designed to gain insight into the experiences of fifteen adolescents and young adults with high functioning autism. Individual, audio-taped, semi-structured interviews were conducted with participants. The parents of the participants were also interviewed separately for the purpose of triangulation of data sources. The grounded theory method was used to analyze the interview data. This process involved using open coding, axial coding, and selective coding. The results from this study related key categories that emerged from the participants’ interviews such as: Participant definitions of Asperger's, positive and challenging aspects of Asperger's, issues with socialization and social cues, and experiences with different interventions. The participants in the study did relate several common characteristics of high functioning autism. Ultimately, this study will enhance and increase HFA awareness in the fields of education and social services.
