This study examines perceptions of veteran successful history teachers and their understanding of factors that distinguish students who do well and struggle in history and historical thinking. Through a focused analysis of interviews with a set of these teachers, several themes were identified as key factors that helped explain what makes history learners successful. This paper presents those distinguishing factors and compares them to expert-constructed tools such as NCHE's History's Habits of Mind.
