Operationalizing the definition of Career Identity: A Concept Analysis

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to understand and define the concept of career identity using Walker and Avant (2005) concept analysis approach. Career literature was searched in databases with the key word career identity or vocational identity. Based on the abstract, relevant articles were reviewed and used for analysis. Findings from the literature reveals different definitions of career identity and its defining attributes. In addition, cases were presented to explain what is and not career identity, antecedents and consequences identified and scales measuring career identity were determined. In conclusion, an operational definition of career identity for this research was developed.
