Using Zimmerman & Schunk’s (2001) self-regulation framework, we will discuss the different phases of regulation. Using Vygotsky’s theory, we will explain the different types of regulation which can occur in college courses, especially in an online format. We then will elaborate on how college instructors can use external, shared and co-regulation within their OL, distance, and flipped courses to enhance their students’ self-regulation, motivation, and learning. We will specifically address: a) creating a sense of community, belonging and social connections; b) encouraging and supporting learner participation and engagement; and c) facilitating various types of interaction.
