When the Truth Hurts: Toward a Validation of the Physician Mistake Disclosure (PMD) Model

Abstract

This study examined a typology of physician mistake disclosure styles, tested mediation effects of physician mistake disclosure skills, and explored interaction effects between disclosure styles and mistake severity levels on disclosure outcomes. The typology was largely validated. Also, the data evidenced that competent disclosure styles mediate the relationship between fight and face threat reactions to perceived criticism. Finally, the results showed consistent associations between competent disclosure skills and positive mistake disclosure outcomes.
