Empowering Patients and Improving Patient-Provider Communication: A Case for ePHRs

Abstract

Health care has recently begun to embrace computer-mediated communication technologies. These new technologies are seen as opportunities for patient empowerment as well as having the capability of improving the quality of care that they receive. This paper looks at one of the newest forms of electronic personal health records, those that are patient-owned and analyzes the opportunities they provide for empowering patients and improving clinician-patient communication and health outcomes.
