The Process of Safer Sex Communication for Transgender Adults

Abstract

Despite being disproportionately affected by HIV/AIDS, the transgender community has been ignored by HIV prevention efforts. With HIV prevention increasingly focused on communication skill, effective intervention with this community requires an understanding of the safer sexual communication of transgender adults. Forty-one transgender adults completed interviews on their perceptions and evaluations of safer sexual communication. The process of safer sex communication for transgender adults involved managing private information, adjudicating risk, and providing social support.
