You Know, God, Sometimes You Ask Me To Do the Hardest Things: An Eliadean Interpretation of Michel Tremblay’s Damnée Manon, Sacrée Sandra

Fri, November 13, 12:30 to 2:00pm, Hilton Chicago, Floor: Second Floor, Normandie Lounge

Abstract

A clear understanding of the cultural efficacy of Damnée Manon, Sacrée Sandra, Michel Tremblay’s postmodern thesis on sex and religion, is provided by examining the play through the lens of Mircea Eliade’s theory of the sacred and profane, highlighting Eliade’s discussion of the axis mundi, of the nostalgia for Paradise and the transcendent world, and of the meaning of symbols and ritual.
