You Gain From a Convention What You Put Into It, Right? Accessibility for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Members Revisited

Abstract

Five years ago, some of the barriers that deaf and hard-of hearing members encountered as they sought to take advantage of the rich opportunities afforded through membership in the National Communication Association and, more specifically, through participation in the Association’s annual convention were enumerated. Specific areas of concern included some of the more obvious ones like interpreting issues; but also discussed were more subtle concerns such as inadequate accessibility to NCA resources and networking limitations. What does the picture look like today? What has been accomplished in recent years? And what remains to be done (and how might it be implemented) to enhance accessibility for deaf and hard-of hearing members?
