Adolescent Decisionmaking about Substance Use: A Meta-Analysis of the Influence of School Activities

Thu, November 12, 2:30 to 4:00pm, Hilton Chicago, Floor: Second Floor, Normandie Lounge

Abstract

The manuscript reports a meta-analysis involving 17 studies that consider the relationship between participation in school activities (sports, clubs, etc.,) and the use of illegal substances. The overall average correlation is slightly negative, but the size of the relationship significantly changes in size as the age of the adolescent increases. The results demonstrate additional evidence for the view of adolescent drug use decisions as related to the existence of interpersonal protective factors.
