Computer-Mediated Communication Versus Vocal Communication in the Amelioration of Stereotypes: A Replication with Three Theoretical Models

Sat, November 14, 3:30 to 4:45pm, Hilton Chicago, Floor: Second Floor, Boulevard Room C

Abstract

Recent research (Epley & Kruger, 2005) has argued that computer-mediated communication (CMC) inherently inhibits the reduction of stereotypes. The current study challenges this assertion theoretically by offering rival hypotheses. Methodological issues concerning the limitation of interactive communication and the inappropriate operationalization of CMC are also addressed. Findings indicate that CMC is functionally equivalent to vocal communication in its ability to reduce negative stereotypes and that it can be superior in creating and/or retaining positive impressions.
