This study examines the influence of attachment style and two situational factors (perceived problem severity and responsibility of the target) on ratings of the helpfulness of esteem support messages. One hundred ninety-six participants rated esteem support messages and completed measures of attachment style and perceptions of situational features. Results indicated that both perceptions of the situation as well as attachment style influenced ratings of message helpfulness.
