Reactions to Everyday Sacrifices: The Role of Communal Strength and Partner Requests

Abstract

Being in an intimate relationships often require individuals to sacrifice on a day to day basis. Such sacrifices often involve personal costs. Although communal strength was associated with increased feelings of a sacrifice’s reward and reduced feelings of request entitlement, the partner’s use of influence tactics was negatively related to such experiences. Contrary to predictions, communal strength was positively related to perceptions that a sacrifice was costly. Mediated relationships are also explored.
