Mother-in-law and daughter-in-law relations in the family context in China: Mothers-in law’s accounts

Abstract

This study examined interview accounts of mother-in-law and daughter-in-law communication from 14 middle-aged and 15 older women in China. The interviews were recorded and transcribed in Chinese. Using thematic analysis approach, major themes of mother-in-law and daughter-in-law communication were identified. Results of this study contribute to our understanding of the impact of the traditional Chinese values in juxtaposition with modernity on communication between mothers-in-law and daughters-in-law in an age of globalization.
