This paper examines the constitutive communication processes of one university academic governance committee through ethnographic and discourse analytic methods, identifying the real work that was done in committee meetings, as opposed to officially articulated goals. Through committee interaction, the members established their own and challenged others professional credibility, constituted the larger faculty and the meaning of faculty member, and ultimately constructed and contested their place of influence and power at the university.
