Using Brown and Levinsons politeness theory as a theoretical framework, this paper explores messages people hear that encourage and/or undermine ones weight loss effort(s). Participants (n=322) trying to lose weight completed questionnaires where they recalled positive and negative messages and their corresponding responses. Findings note categories of encouraging and undermining messages, and the importance of giving face-saving responses that motivate continued adherence to weight loss program. Practical and theoretical implications for are discussed.
