Group researchers have been challenged to gain a more thorough understanding of relational communication (Keyton, 1999). This study investigates contextual influence on explicit relational messages across three natural contexts and four meeting activities. Results show that context and meeting activity type were influential factors in determining relational and task message distributions. Specifically, distributions of relational messages varied across relational meeting activities, and distributions of task messages varied across task meeting activities.
