Photographs that depict suffering are controversial because they are thought by some to exploit those who have suffered. This paper explores the concept of photographing artifacts which represent suffering, questioning whether they can be activist. Photographic theory and semiotic analysis are used to analyze six photographs taken of a monument in Ciudad Juarez. The photographs make a powerful statement without exploitation of the victims, as they show the aftermath rather than the suffering itself.
