A Kernel of Truth? The Impact of Television Storylines Exploiting Myths About Organ Donation on the Public’s Willingness to Donate

Fri, November 13, 8:00 to 9:15am, Hilton Chicago, Floor: Fourth Floor, Meeting Room 4B

Abstract

658 participants viewed one of 30 full-length entertainment television episodes. Fifteen of these episodes centered on an organ donation storyline; the remaining fifteen were matched by program, but did not feature organ donation, thus serving as controls. Results indicated non-donors were significantly impacted by negative organ donation-related content. Organ donation storylines produced more negative attitudes, less accurate knowledge, and less willingness to donate among non-donors.
