Enhancing Person-centered Communication to Improve Medication Adherence Among Patients with Chronic Health Conditions

Fri, November 13, 2:30 to 4:00pm, Hilton Chicago, Floor: Second Floor, Normandie Lounge

Abstract

Narratives generated from 30 interviews and four focus groups were analyzed to explore perceptions about medication adherence, person-centered care, and communication from providers. Three themes were identified: communicating based on knowledge of the patent’s individual and family characteristics, communicating to show respect for the patient’s unique values, preferences, and needs; communication emphasizing freedom of choice and individually-defined, reasonable risk taking.
