What would the Shroomery Backbone be without Ripper: A Dialogic Analysis of Discursive Tensions in Online Social Support

Abstract

The current study adopts Dialogism theory to analyze recorded transcripts of an Internet relay chat interaction among individuals who viewed Brandon Vedas’ (aka ripper) drug overdose death over webcam broadcast. This analysis reveals how meaning emerged in the interplay between three primary discourses, sensation seeking, support, and secrecy. Beyond addressing this particular case of online social support, this study advocates adopting perspectives that allow consideration of the often emergent and fleeting nature of online communication.
