Remembering Identities: Accessing Media Literacy for Religious Communities

Fri, November 13, 12:30 to 2:00pm, Hilton Chicago, Floor: Second Floor, Normandie Lounge

Abstract

Digital Media have saturated culture, invaded values, and overwhelmed traditional information systems. To cope with influences of media, educators and scholars have suggested the need for a "media literacy" that can teach youth to properly "read" media. But media also affects our identity and sense of meaning. I suggest that media literacy study, while valuable, is best understood when viewed in the context of identity and the role of community.
