The influence of an offer of reparation or compensation (OR/C) on apologies is examined by means of a survey. Results indicated that OR/Cs are given in response to more severe hurtful events, but do not increase the likelihood of apology acceptance. Value and appropriateness of an OR/C were found to predict the likelihood of its acceptance. OR/Cs and apologies were found to be treated as related but distinct by participants. Other significant findings are discussed.
