Pragmatism and the Legacy of Sophistical Rhetoric

Abstract

As F.C.S. Schiller pointed out over a century earlier, the rhetorical tradition of the Sophists is in many ways the inheritance of the philosophical tradition of pragmatism. This panel continues the exploration of this fruitful relationship that brings forth the best of the dialogue between philosophy and rhetoric. Moreover, each paper explores how this dialogue enriches both interlocutors and provides a more coherent notion of cooperative symbolic action.
