The Changing Role of Engaged and Public Scholarship within the Discipline and the Academy

Abstract

Higher education is placing increasing emphasis on engaged scholarship as an obligation to the public. While communication scholars have long engaged in public service, outreach, community-based participatory research, action research, and critical research, the engaged scholarship model asks us to reconsider "what is scholarship?" along with how we measure academic success and impact. In this interdisciplinary discussion, experienced scholars discuss how their departments, institutions, and the discipline are responding, and the challenges and opportunities remaining.
