Session Submission Summary

What Does NCA Stand for? and Should It Have a Public Voice?

Fri, November 13, 9:30 to 10:45am, Hilton Chicago, Floor: Fourth Floor, Meeting Room 4I

Session Submission Type: Panel Discussion

Abstract

When should academic associations, like NCA, take public positions on current issues? and
On what current issues should NCA consider taking public positions? Ten years ago, the association opposed campus speech codes and laws establishing English as an official language but with recent decisions NCA stands at a cross-roads trying to determine what is its role in public discourse. The panelist will begin the discussion by addressing activism by academic associations, NCA's "voice" in policy debates, and issues of communicative consequence. The Freedom of Expression division welcomes every NCA member to attend this important panel and voice their opinions at the open microphone.
