In the context of globalization, places are increasingly enmeshed in economic, technological, and political relations, while populations are characterized by new forms of mobility and connectivity. In such a context, how people construct a sense of place? I argue for the importance of new empirical research in critical and cultural studies, and I report on my recent fieldwork carried out in the city of Concepción, a major urban center in southern Chile.
