Traditional Black Masculinity, Mental Health, and Intersectionality

Fri, March 8, 9:30 to 10:45am, Hilton San Jose, Floor: Lobby, Market 1

Abstract

The infantilization and fetishization of Black women has a long history dating back to
early colonialism. However, the sexplotation and frankly, misogynistic views of black women
have not gone away. Those views became ingrained into the psychology of black women and how
they see the world and themselves. I explore how these misogynistic ideologies play
into black women’s adolescence both from the household and through media. Many black
women at some point have heard phrases along the lines of “You actin fast” or “Put some clothes
on men are coming over”.
