Abstract

The study explores how visual art and music convey historical and cultural importance regarding the Anglo-Asante resistance and the struggles and successes of the Civil Rights Movement. It focuses on female leaders such as Yaa Asantewaa, Billie Holiday, and Nina Simone. I have created a visually captivating narrative through my multidisciplinary research involving visual analysis, historical research, and musical interpretation. This narrative uses artwork, photographs, and music to capture the essence of Yaa Asantewaa and the emotional and thematic significance of the musical catalogs of Nina Simone and Billie Holiday. The research has uncovered essential components reflecting Yaa Asantewaa's leadership, cultural background, and symbolism of her resistance. Additionally, it highlights the influence of Billie Holiday and Nina Simone's music on the Civil Rights Movement, emphasizing their contributions' emotional and inspiring elements. My research contributes to historical scholarship by establishing links between Anglo-Ashanti history and the Civil Rights Movement. Moreover, it emphasizes the significance of acknowledging and promoting the role of women in resistance movements, which leads to a more complete and inclusive understanding of historical narratives. My study showcases the transformative potential of interdisciplinary approaches by integrating various perspectives, which helps to shape historical discourse and promote a deeper understanding of cultural resilience and activism.
