This research looks at the issue of Black representation through an Afrocentric lens. Using qualitative and quantitative data from online databases, books, and publications it shows the disparities Black students face in college. In addition, the data highlights the fact that Black professors are underrepresented at most college institutions. I argue that the underperformance of Black students in higher education can be improved by implementing strategies to recruit Black professors. The motivation for this research comes from my personal experience as a Black student and wanting to amplify the Black student experience. Institutions need to take action and address this systemic failure. Critical thinking on this subject is essential for improving campus communities. Educating non-Black professionals on campus on how to support the Black students cannot be overlooked. Representation in the professoriate gives Black students a visible model of academic success. Choosing to establish a faculty that reflects the diversity of the students can make higher education undaunting for Black students. Importantly, it will encourage college institutions to acknowledge the value of diversifying their campuses and what that means for the students. Further research will delve into a deeper understanding of Black student success and how it is achieved.
