Transformative Social Innovation in Action: Implementation of the Self-care for Black Women in Leadership (SCBWL) Program in Northwestern Nigeria

Thu, March 20, 5:00 to 6:15pm, Hilton Cincinnati Netherland Plaza, Floor: 4th, Salon H

Abstract

The Self-care for Black Women in Leadership (SCBWL)program is a transformative social innovation designed by Black feminists at CompassPoint, a nonprofit based in Oakland, California, USA. It addresses inter-generational trauma/epigenetic injuries stemming from the Trans-Atlantic Slave trade and the afterlives of colonialism in Africa and its Diaspora, which impact the day-to-day experiences of African/Black women globally.

SCBWL promotes optimal health and well-being through storytelling, dancing, cooking, yoga, exercise, resting/napping, meditation, art-based therapy, and breathing techniques. Primary program outcomes include (1) understanding the impact of racism on health, (2) knowing how to draw upon ancestral wisdom and the community in creating daily self-care practices that work for Black women (3) understanding the importance of a “community of learning” to create systems of support and accountability to achieve and maintain self-care goals, and (4) understanding the importance of leading and strategizing from a rested and rejuvenated place.

SCBWL was implemented virtually at the Survivors Support Forum organized by Nigeria’s National Agency for Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) in March 2023 and facilitated in person (April 2023) in collaboration with the Basileia Vulnerable Persons Rights Initiative (BVPRI) and the Sexual Assault Resource Center (SARC) in Northwestern Nigeria (Kaduna). I plan to discuss lessons from the program’s implementation and participant feedback, including strategies for creating long-term plans for personal sustainability, peer connection with a supportive network of Black Diaspora women in the United States, and the ongoing development of a Community of Practice (CoP) on Radical Self-care.
