Which Afro in the Afrofuture?

Abstract

What is the "Afro" in Afrofuturism? This paper will explore the linkages between various points of Black speculative thought that have emerged in academic discourse in the past twenty-five years to consider the Afrocentric origins of Afrofuturism, Afrosurrealism, and Afropessimism. Drawing from recent Black Studies scholarship that situates these threads as part of the same tapestry and intellectual project, this paper will examine what thinking the spurs of Black speculative thought together might teach us about the Black condition today.
