Virtual Reality As A Teaching Tool: Teaching Ghanaian History in Africana Studies

Fri, March 21, 5:00 to 6:15pm, Hilton Cincinnati Netherland Plaza, Floor: 4th, Salon H

Session Submission Type: Media Session

Abstract

Virtual reality can provide an immersive experience for learners to experience parts of the world without the financial burden of studying abroad. As Ghana sits as the most popular study abroad destination in West Africa, there is a clear demand for learning about Ghanaian history and cultures. While many hope to visit the country, it is not always feasible. During this session, we will explain our process of creating a virtual reality experience of Assin Manso and the Cape Coast Castle in Ghana. After showing the steps to create the experience, we will ask participants to explore the experience themselves. All participants will learn about both Assin Manso and the Cape Coast Castle through virtual reality. The session will end with a discussion on student learning outcomes and ways to integrate technology into the classroom.
