The Debate on Cosmopolitanism in Strauss and Kojeve

Abstract

Leo Strauss and Alexandre Kojeve met in Berlin in the roaring twenties. Since then, they kept a philosophical friendship that lasted till the death of Kojeve in 1968. This paper will try to figure out what were the chief philosophical and political disagreements between these two thinkers during their debate on tyranny in the 1950s. I will focus my attention on their difference of opinion concerning cosmopolitanism and patriotism.
