'Shut Up and Sing': The Impacts and Societal Reactions to Female Musicians on Political Participation

Sat, November 16, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Omni Parker Mezzanine, Louisa May Alcott A

Abstract

The following thesis seeks to uncover the association between female music, political
participation, and the societal parameters in which these artists can exist to speak on political
matters. Using a narrative coding analysis, I present the story of female musicians and their
experiences with gender discrimination in the music industry and society, and how they are
turning their anger into political empowerment as a method of change. Additionally, I apply a
qualitative case analysis using The Chicks and Toby Keith and their political messaging in the
early 2000’s to identify the barriers women faced when faced with extreme backlash due to
political activism. The use of these cases highlights the disparities and differences in the
experiences between men and women as they explore their political platforms, and why these
cases strengthen the use of music to communicate political injustices.
