Although for some time IR researchers have been using constructivism as a frame of reference that incorporates identity considerations, there are unique characteristics of many global south countries that merit careful research. This presentation builds on the presenter’s research on and in Cuba to develop an identity and culturally-based approach to the external relations of a country that is still operating in the ideological realm long after the end of the Cold War. The presentation offers insights into conducting research using a variety of empirical, interpretative and discourse methodologies.
