In this project, the aim is to investigate the opportunities and challenges in transitioning to solar energy generation in Saudi Arabia. I will assess the environmental, economic, and social impacts of solar energy adoption in the country and how the cultural and political factors play roles in the adoption of solar energy technology applications. The primary research question of this study is, how does adopting solar energy contribute to the Saudi Arabia's official sustainability goals (Vision 2023)?
The general conceptual framework of this study will be the three dimensions of sustainability that are commonly stated in the literature: environmental, economic, and social (Cavagnaro & Curiel, 2022; Gomes et al., 2022; Candemir et al., 2021; Nikolaou et al., 2021; Cabezas et al., 2004; Bazan & Slawecki, 2002; Purvis et al., 2019; Dragicevic, 2020; Brenner & Hartl, 2021). In my analyses of the solar energy projects in Saudi Arabia, I will focus on their environmental impacts, such as reducing carbon emissions and conserving natural resources. Economically, I will evaluate how solar energy fosters growth by creating jobs and diversifying the economy away from oil dependence. Socially, I will assess how solar projects impact communities, including their role in promoting energy equity. Additionally, I will examine min cultural attitudes, traditions, governance structures, and political dynamics that may or may not promote the adoption and expansion of solar energy. I will study these dimensions by conducting interviews with key informants in the government, business, and education sectors in Saudi Arabia.
